28 Nov. 09 2009 Bang Saen - 4th in Endurance Race !

Paul at Bang Saen 2009

Paul ready to change over with John in the pitlane. Bang Saen 2009. John Heinecke relaxing in the pitlane after just finishing his race.

Team Paul & John takes 4th place in Bang Saen Endurance race.

Back at Thailand's most awesome street circuit for the 2009 Bang Saen Grand Prix, Paul Kenny and John Heinecke entered their car into the Super Production 1500 class, up against 17 other competitors. This was John's first encounter with the Bang Saen circuit and he absolutely loved it. Paul of course is a veteran of the course.

In spite of some mechanical issues early in the race the duo managed to stay well in contention, laboring on between 3rd and 6th place. A strong push by both drivers towards the latter half of the race, saw them securing 4th place. Not easy though, as even on the last lap Paul was in a 4 car squabble, fighting for places over the mountain, but Paul was decisive as always and cleared 2 cars by the time he took the checkered flag for the team.

Both drivers were exhausted, but very satisfied with their race cars performance and are looking forward to next year's race already.

Paul Kenny

First 2009 Podium

Who say’s you can’t race when you get older…..? Paul was living proof of that this past weekend, after having just turn 60 year the previous week. Paul matched his best ever lap time around Bira in the time trials, but unfortunately this was only enough for a 14th place on the grid, but knowing Paul’s race craft, the team were all hoping that he would move further up the grid in the races.

However Paul’s car developed a few problems on Saturday's first race and he never managed to gain back the lost time and did not show his real speed as a result.

On Sunday it was a very focused driver that was in the car, starting from the back of the grid, he pushed right from the start setting lap times down towards his best ever around the track. All the while being on old used tires - impressing the team and his son, who was visiting Thailand and the racetrack to see his dad in the race car for the first time.

Paul moved into 9th place overall by the end of the race and 5th in his class and his first podium in 2009. It was an exhausted but very happy driver that celebrated in the pits Sunday afternoon. The next race is now 2 months away, so there is plenty of time to prepare the car for the next race which will be at Bangsaen, Paul’s favorite track in Thailand.

9 May 09 2009 First SuperCar race

First race of the year

It felt good to be back behind the wheel again after such a long break, since the last race at Bangsaen last year. Terry at AVO turbo had been working on my car and had installed new brakes on the car, which were indeed very good and gave me a lot more confidence.

I decided to move up one class this year and join the modified cars in the Super 1500 class, but knew this would be very hard. Already in the first practice session I was back in the groove and with the added stopping power, I was ready to give it my best shot.

I was a bit disappointed to find myself in 14th place at the time trials as I felt I had driven quite good, but that were the facts.

I got off to an okay start, but the other cars were just much faster off the grid and I saw myself a long way down the field. I pushed hard to get back up the field and gained a few position, but on the long straight the power was just not there and I could not get close enough to try and overtake the other drivers in front of me.

Up at the front they drove hard and one after another they dropped out, which worked to my advantage and I kept gaining places in the race. My car was great and the handling was very good, but the power was just not there, so I was quite happy ending up in 11th place out of 23 cars in my first race.

On Sunday we were at it again and I drove my heart out to gain some places, but the speed on the straight was still not there, so I had to settle for a 16th place which was a bit disappointing, but we know where the problem is, so Terry will be hard at work to increase the power of the car before the next race at Bira, which is kind of my home track, so I am confident I will be able to do better there.

24 Mar. 09 6 Hour Endurance Race at Bira

My second 6-hour race

I really enjoyed my first 6 hour race last year at Bang Saen Speed Festival, so I looked forward to this years 6-hour race event at Bira, which is kind of my home track. I spoke with Thomas, and we agreed to team up for the event, and also spoke to Michael Freeman about joining us. Michael said yes right away, and he organized along with Terry from AVO Turbo to get my car race prepared for the event.

The first day we did some testing in the car, and it felt very comfortable, which made me confident to push even more, with the result that I matched my best ever lap time around Bira on Radials, in my first stint after a 5 months winter break. The qualifying went well, and we had to start in 5th place. We all agreed that this was just for fun, and that if a top 5 place was achievable that would be great, but not important, as long as we had fun.

I felt that I was likely to be the slower of the 3 drivers in the car, so I wanted to give my best to the team, and I pushed right from the start in my first stint, and was surprised to see how competitive I was, as I was actually passing guys that normally are in the top 5 in my class. I got really into it, and did not worry about laps times any more, as I just wanted to do my best every lap.

I was happy to be able to hand over the car to Thomas knowing that I had done my best, and I really had a good time in the car. After I spoke to the guys in the pit, I found out that I had actually been leading the whole race for more than 15 laps, I got even more fired up, as I felt we had a good chance of getting into top 5 in the class.

In my second stint, I again, dug deep to do my best, and I was surprised to see my laps times going into the 1.19’s which before had seemed like something impossible, but there it was and I was passing cars left and right, and I was having other great fights with cars trying to get past me. When I was back into the pits and handed over the car to Thomas, I knew we would likely not make it into the top 5, as we were 2 laps behind, but we were all on the pit wall, cheering on Thomas for his last stint.

Suddenly one of the guys saw that Car No. 14 had retired from the race from 4th place, and we were now headed for a podium finish, which would be my first ever Podium finish in endurance racing, and my first podium in my first race of 2009. Now the next 15 mins became, unbearable, as we both wanted Thomas to catch the car ahead of him, and maybe even get up into 4th, but also wanted him to spare the car, so we could get at least a 5th place.

Chris our Team Manager, did a great job the whole day, and he said, we agreed we were he to have fun, so why not let him try and go for the 4th place, and we all agreed. With 5 mins to go it was looking impossible, even though we were catching them with 3 seconds a lap, so we just started the count down, and were very pleased to see the car finish the race in 5th place. I am now very confident for the first race of the season, as I know that my car with the new KW race suspension likely will be even better.

My goal for 2009 is to finish in the top 10 in every race meeting, and collect points in every race event, with hopefully 1 or 2 podium finishes during the year.

6 Hour Endurance Race at Bira

Paul Kenny

We are busy preparing the car for the 6 hour race at Bira next weekend, 20th and 21st of March. The race suspension from KW is on order but will not be ready in time for the 6 hour race, so this will have to be done after the race event.

I will be racing with Michael Freeman and Thomas Raldorf in car number 55 for the 6 hour race and we will have a great time at the track, I am sure.

The car is also having a number of other up-grades for the new season, like a new brake system and improvements to the roll cage and a general overhaul of the engine and gearbox, plus the LSD, to ensure its ready for the first real race of the season in May at Sa Khaew.

I am also looking forward to getting back out on the track, to do some testing and get back into racing after the long brake over “the winter period”.

It always make me smile when I hear that, as the winter period in Thailand means it gets “really cold” and the temperatures drop down to around 24-30 degrees Celsius in the day time and 14-20 degrees Celsius in the night time…..

I have started my fitness program again and hope to be back in full shape mid April.

I would also like to welcome Ray Macdonald to our team for the 2009 season and hope that he will adapt well to his new car and new team and will have a great season with us.

Paul races the Bangsaen Grand Prix

With his very tight schedule Paul this year managed to join the Bangsaen race event, which is considered to be the hardest, but also the most thrilling event of the year. In 2007 he had to sit out the event due to an elbow injury, but this year there was no way he was going to miss the event.

To make up for the missing laps from 2007, he also decided to join the 6 Hour Endurance race with famous former Australian Formula 5000 driver, Iain Corness. The 2 teamed up for the 6 hour race and was 1 team out of 29 teams that joined in total. They encountered a few problems with the car during the race and was therefore not able to end up where they deserved. However, they managed to finish the race, which a number of other teams did not. Paul and Iain ended their first 6 hour race at Bangsaen in 15th place, after having been up to 8th place and having the speed to challenge for a podium position.

The car was checked and re-checked for the last round of the Supercar Series on Sunday, where Paul was starting from 13th place, out of the 24 drivers that was in the race. Paul had set a blistering pace during the Qualifying session, improving on his best ever lap time around the circuit by almost 2 seconds, setting a time of 2.18.835.

In the race he was well fired up and after doing all the laps around the circuit in the Endurance race, he was full of confidence and improved a further 3 seconds setting his best lap at 2.15.804. Paul moved up from his starting position as 13th into 10th by the end of the 2nd lap and was for catching the driver in 9th place, when his butterfly in the throttle body got stock in full open position and he then had to try and save the car from crashing or blowing up the engine and once done had to switch of the engine. That was it for Paul and he could not finish the race.

Paul's steady performance during the year has helped Tony Percy and himself in the team championship, where they finished 3rd overall. Not bad at all for the team considering it is the first year they are racing in this class.

Further improvements for Paul

Paul continued his steady improvements again setting his fastest lap around Bira ever and also claiming his best finish in the Super 1500 Series. In Friday’s qualifying he struggled a little to match the pace he had in Thursday practice sessions, all because he was running with a different suspension set up. The team found that the suspension settings had been set at the softest possible and thought this was a mistake, so it was altered to be what the drivers normally use. It turned out that the settings had been set like that on purpose, as Terry and the guys from AVO Turbo had been watching Paul’s driving style and felt that a softer setting would sit him better. This turned out to be the best set up and once the settings were back at the soft, Paul was again back on the pace.

Race 1:
Paul had a good start and gained several places being more aggressive than what he normally is and he looked like a “fired up” driver, that had it out with one of the Proton Factory team drivers for 11th and 12th place for several laps. Paul finished the race in 11th place out of 27 drivers, which is his best result to date. In the process he drove a lap of 1.18.154, setting his personal best ever lap time around Bira.

Race 2:
Paul again had a good start, but the other drivers where driving just as hard and Paul ended up getting pushed off the track onto the grass, loosing several positions. He then charged down on the drivers in front of him and was getting closer and closer to his best ever lap time around Bira - set in Race 1. Then, again he got pushed off the track during a fight for position and once again he was in the charge mode, but by now the front runners were starting to lap them. He had to make room for them and lost the momentum he had going and eventually had to settle for a 17th place out of the 27 drivers that started the race.

Paul had a good race, but like Thomas were disappointed that he ended up in 17th as he had the speed to be in the top 10. Had it not been for him being pushed of the track he would likely have made it, which was why he was not looking too happy Sunday afternoon. Paul is now looking forward to the race around Bang Saen, which will likely be the biggest race event of the year and is focused on even more practice to be done around Bira in the coming 2.5 months before the race which will be on the 8th and 9th of November.

11 July 08 Super Car Thailand Round 3 and 4 at Bira Circuit

Paul Kenny and Tony Percy

Paul pushed the car to the limit

Paul’s new found aggression in his race car continued at round 3 and 4 of the Super Car Thailand Racing event at Bira on the 28th and 29th of June. Paul’s previous best time ever around Bira was a 1.20.5, which he already beat during his time trail, setting a time of 1.20.33.

The time was good enough for a 14th place, but since Paul had been fighting with the 12th, 13th and 14th placed drivers in Sa Khaew last month, he was not happy with the time although it was faster than he had ever driven at Bira. It was a very concentrated and determined Paul Kenny that was sat in the car on the starting grid.

Round 3:
Paul got of to a careful start and dropped to 17th place, to ensure that he was not involved in any first corner incidents and there after he started to push hard. One of Paul’s problems earlier had been that he brakes to early and to soft, this time there was high speed entering the corners with occasional some smoke coming from the tires under braking as he was pushing hard.

He slowly but steadily started to advance and with a number of good out braking maneuvers at the end of the straight he was suddenly up into 12th and chasing down the 11th placed driver. The times sheets showed that he was faster than both the driver in 9th, 10th and 11th place. Unfortunately Paul ran out of laps, and finished his 3rd race of the season in 12th place, setting a new personal best ever lap of 1.18.3 around Bira, which is light years faster than before in racing terms.

Round 4:
It was a fired up Paul that again was on the grid Sunday for the 4th round, this time starting in 15th position. He again took it easy into first corner, but on first lap the engine developed a problem and was cutting out all the time. It was easy to see Paul’s frustration in the car as he knew he was very competitive.

Soon Paul was ½ a lap behind the field of drivers and it was looking like he wanted to come in to the pits and retire, but he did the only sensible thing and continued, with the engine limping along.

As quickly as the problem had started it again disappeared, suddenly he was able to push again and now he again started the chase, now even more fired up than the first day. The car still had an occasional huff and a puff, but in general it was okay and Paul again did lap times in the 1.18’s, and slowly but surely caught up to the drivers in front of him. Again he ran out of laps though and had to settle for 14th place.

The car has now gone back to be checked and Paul is focused on more testing and further improvements. The goal will be to finish top 10 for the 5th and 6th round which will be held at Korat on the 23rd and 24th of August.

Paul announces his retirement from kart racing !

The Pizza Company Motorsport supremo, Paul Kenny joined the third round of the 2008 Rotax Max Challenge race in Saraburi on June 1st, competing in all 4 heats in the grueling heat - only to step out of his Italkart racing machine upon completing the race to announce his retirement from active karting. In Paul's own words; "kart racing is a young man's sport". Now he will stick with Touring Car racing !

Having had a first heat DNF due to a failed chain guard and subsequent loss of drive chain, Paul fought his way back during the day with good heat finishes in both the second heat and the Pre-Final. In the 20 lap Final the 21 competitors were fighting the scorching track temperatures as much as one another. Paul enjoyed some good challenges with the other competitors and his fitness saw him easily finishing the race.

Content with both the race and his own pace, the 1995 Thai National Champion announced afterwards his retirement from active kart racing. Full of praise for the sport, he feels now the time is right to focus more on his Touring Car racing.

It has been a pleasure racing kart with you Paul and all the best for your continued racing !

Paul impresses at Sa Kaeo

The freshly rebuilt Vios took some getting used to, but by the time of Saturday qualifying Paul put the car in 14th place on the 22 car grid for Race 1 (Saturday).

In the second qualifying Paul placed himself 15th for Sunday's 2nd race.

Paul was off to a rough start in the first race on Saturday and lost several positions in the start, but then got his head down and raced his way back up the field during the heat to end in 11th place, his best position yet on this very strong 22 car grid. Paul got to experience some tough and close racing and thoroughly enjoyed being back in the racing seat after a long off season.

The second race offered new challenges as the rains had come in and the race start went on a wet track. Again a new set of obstacles in a virtually new and untested car, as Paul started from 15th and again lost several positions in the start. Paul fell all the way down to 19th place before he again started clawing his way up the field. Several awesome overtaking maneuvers later and in the process setting his fastest time for the weekend, Paul finished the race in a noble 13th place.

A very strong showing by Paul after a long lay off from racing and he is now more then geared up for his next race at Pattaya's Bira Circuit in the end of June.

Super 1500 "Standard"

Paul will in 2008 be competing in the new class called Super 1500 “Standard". Super 1500 covers 2 classes, “Open” & “Standard”.

The “Open” class is open to any car/model of any age which has a 1500 CC engine. Any modification can be done to the engine and car, except adding Turbo or Supercharger.

The “Standard” Class  is only for cars which are produced in Thailand, the cars can  not be more than 5 years old and can not have an engine over 1500 CC. The Engine can not be modified. You can only do a few external things with the engine, such as changing the exhaust header, adding a Piggy Bag or an Engine Management Control System. As for the body work, suspension and brakes, more or less any changes can be made as long as the car is within the minimum weight.

Paul is returning to his preferred car, which is his Toyota Vios which is currently being modified to match the technical specifications of the Super 1500 class. The car is currently being prepared by AVO in Sattahip and will be ready for testing in a few weeks. Paul is looking forward to his first race this season, which will be at Sepang F1 Circuit in Malaysia.

6 Sept 07 2007 Round 3 in Phuket

Paul Kenny in the Toyota Yaris, Group B for the third round 2007

3rd round of the Toyota Yaris Championship in Phuket

The 3rd round of the Championship was held in Phuket over the past weekend 1st and 2nd September. The track was a street circuit with some tight and twisty turns, and a few corners that were quite technical.

The weekend was looking quite promising for Paul, as he had been getting lessons from an Australian Pro-driver, and had been working with both Martin and Thomas at Bira on the car set up, and actually managed to set his fastest ever lap around Bira in his Yaris before heading to Phuket.

Saturday morning, Paul was on the track, and was right at it, and was putting in some good laps. Paul’s was having a few Thoughts on how to take the chicane, and was testing them lap by lap. He quickly found out how NOT to take it, as he almost lost it on one of the first laps, but his quick reactions and driving skills, kept him on the track, and he was then right back at it again.

It was clear to see that he had an added confidence in both the car and himself, and he kept pushing, until he eventually went o the track, as he was pushing too hard. This is how ever the way to go, the team agreed, as this would show you exactly how fast it is possible to go, before you go off.

In the first round Paul was 3 sec of the pace of Ray Macdonald, in the second round he was during practice 2 sec of the pace of Ray, and in the race he was only 1 sec of his pace. During practice in Phuket he was only 0.6 of his pace, and closing it steadily. It was looking like it was going to be close between Ray and Paul.

Just before the Time trails it started to rain, and Paul has never really driven his Yaris in the rain with the exception of 1 session in Chiang Mai where he was very fast, but then came of the track “big style”, He was therefore a little careful and held back during the session, as he did not want to go off the track, and not get a timed lap.

Paul qualified in 14th place, next to his nemesis Ray, and knew that if it was dry in the race, he would try and everything in his power to try and beat Ray in this round, as they were almost equally fast.

As the race day came up, it was dry and Paul was set on getting past Ray. He had a good start, but at the first corner, he was on the outside of Ray and had to fall in behind him and take up the chase.

Paul pushed hard, and kept up with the back of Ray, and was driving right to the limit to hang onto him, but on lap 5, he was again pushing just that little bit to hard, and lost the car trough the chicane, exactly the same place as in the Practice sessions, but this time he went off big style, and took out a few of the tires in the chicane, before ramming into the barrier, and coming to a full stop.

That unfortunately spelt the end for his race, but he was still quite happy, as he knew he was now on the same pace as Ray, and he agreed with the team that it was back out on the testing days, and back to work, at getting even faster for the next round.

Although Paul Kenny had very limited time for practice prior to the second round of the 2007 Toyota one make race, he enjoyed the very fast street circuit tremendously. He kept improving his lap time around the 1,5 km long city block with each outing and even set his fastest time during the race itself.

Paul Qualified in 13th place during Saturdays 15 minute qualifying session. In the race Sunday afternoon Paul was quickly off the mark fighting for first corner positions, mixing it with the other 2 Pizza Company racers. I the end Paul finished 12th in the 30 lap race. The temperature went up to a grueling 40º Celsius and the high temperatures took their toll on both drivers and cars.

The next race will now be at Saphan Hin on sunny Phuket Island on 19th August. The team is adamant to get in more practice for the next race and get the entire Pizza Company race team into the points.

The first race of the Toyota One Make Race series kicked off in Chiang Mai on May 5 - 6. The Pizza Company racing team only saw their brand new Group B, Toyota Yaris race cars the day before the race itself. Having been given only 3 practice sessions, all in wet and rainy conditions, Paul still quickly adapted to the new car and set very good practice times on the slippery track. The Saturday qualifying would though be on a dry track with a car set up never tried before. Paul struggled with his car set up in the dry and ended up qualifying 16th. Sunday morning saw again a wet track and constant rain and Paul felt sure of picking his way up through the grid. It was though not to be and like on Saturday, then track just dried out in time for the Yaris race. Paul did though thoroughly enjoy his race and the new Yaris car, eventually finishing in 12th position. He is now looking forward to the next race which will be on June 23-24 in Ubon Ratchatani and Paul is planning some familiarization runs with the new car in the run up to the second round of the season.

Paul ads yet another race class to his formidable racing CV.

Having raced earlier in both Formula Renault, Nascar, Toyota Vios series and karts, Paul now ads yet another single seater to this, with the super fast Aim II Concept car. The race practice was held at Bira International Circuit on October 13th 2006 and the race went on the following day, Saturday 14th. After a torrential downpour on Saturday Paul qualified 9th. The race got underway with a rolling start and Paul got off to a good start and charged hard, a little too hard as it were and on lap 4 he hit some standing water coming at high speed out on the straight. With the awesome power these very capable single seater's are packing, it was but a split second before the car spun out on the water and there was nothing Paul could do to save it and he went off on the wet grass and into retirement. Paul was though very happy with the experience and is now looking forward to the Pizza Company Race Team's next race, the final 2006 Toyota Vios race on November 5th at Bira.

The Pizza Company Race Team 1

Paul was the only one of the Pizza Company who managed to advance from qualifying position in the race itself. After an initial qualification to 19th on the grid, Paul steadily climbed to finish 16th. At the end of the race all 3 Pizza company cars were driving together, all limping with their war wounds, but much to the spectators delight.

The race was grueling tough to start with and became even more challenging towards the end, with breaks wearing completely out combined with the blistering heat. Paul finishes 7th in the 2005 Rotax Master series
Known for his hard charging and for never surrendering a position without a fight, Paul secured 7th in Thailand's largest kart class. The grid normally draws 20-30 karts for each race start and only through consistently finishing well into the points could he secure this position. The Pizza Company, Sizzler and Swensen's race team featured well in all of 2005 races.
